Why We’re Building the Why App

Team WHY
21 May 2025

Hey there! Picture this: you’re brainrotting, dodging ads, influencers, and all that digital noise. Sounds exhausting, doesn’t it? That’s exactly why we’re pouring our energy into building Why, an app designed to cut through the chaos and spark real, meaningful conversations, an overall fun experience. This isn’t some slick marketing pitch. I’m just sharing, like we’re chatting over coffee, why we’re so excited about this project. Btw, Why is open source! You can check out our code anytime at https://github.com/WhyTheApp.

A Space for Real Talk, Coming Soon

The internet’s a wild place. It’s great for connecting people, but it’s also become an echo chamber where only the loudest or most viral voices get heard. Remember how a certain guy bought a huge Social Media platform for bringing free speech to it, but ended up full of bots repeating the same narative? We’re building Why to change that. We want a platform where you can ask big questions, share your thoughts, and actually hear what others have to say, all without the pressure to go viral or fit in if you don't seek that. Imagine a digital campfire where everyone gets a seat and nobody’s shouting over each other. That’s the vibe we’re working toward as we code away.

Free Speech, Done Fairly

You might recall us talking about free speech. It’s a core part of Why. We’re not aiming for a chaotic free-for-all, though. We’re crafting a platform where free speech is fair, giving everyone a voice, not just the influencers or the loudest trolls. Our team’ll be developing a feed algorithm that doesn’t favor follower counts or clickbait tactics. It’s all about lifting up thoughtful questions, real ideas, and diverse perspectives. We’re still tweaking it (check our progress at https://github.com/WhyTheApp), but the goal is a space where what you say matters more than how many followers you have.

Proudly Built in Europe

We’re thrilled to be building Why right here in Europe. Why does that matter? Because Europe’s a hub of diverse cultures, ideas, and values, and that shapes how we approach this app. Our team’s navigating Europe’s strong focus on privacy and user rights, ensuring Why respects your data while fostering open conversations. Being European gives us a unique perspective, and we’re weaving that into every line of code we write. You'll get European data security privileges anywhere in the world.

Building in Public, Building with You

One of the coolest things about Why is that we’re building it in the open. It’s all out there on https://github.com/WhyTheApp for anyone to see, contribute to (if you're eager to respect our code guidelines), or geek out over. We’re embracing this “build in public” approach because we don’t want to create Why behind closed doors. As of today, 21st of May 2025, features like the News page (for dev updates and more thoughts from us) and the Roadmap (to show what’s coming), are being shared with you and shaped by your feedback. We’re not just building this for you. We’re building it for us all, and with you.

Why “Why”? Because Questions Are Everything

The name Why isn’t just a catchy hook, though we think it’s pretty rad. It’s a nod to the one question that drives everything: Why do we accept all that? Why do we get fed with all this nonsense? WHY DOESN'T SOCIAL MEDIA FEEL LIKE 2014 FACEBOOK ANYMORE? We’re building Why to be a place where you can dig into those questions, whether they’re about the meaning of life or why your neighbor’s dog barks at 3 a.m. It’s about sparking curiosity, not just mindless scrolling.

A Community, Not a Popularity Contest

Social media can feel like a popularity contest on steroids, right? We’re designing Why to be different. It’s not about how many followers you have or how perfect your profile looks. The Profile tab we’re working on will let you share who you are, but it’s about your ideas, not your ego. The Friends tab will make it easy to connect with people who spark your curiosity. And those News and Roadmap pages? They’re there to keep you in the loop on what’s next, so you’re part of the journey. Want a peek at what we’re coding? It’s all on https://github.com/WhyTheApp.

The Big Picture

Ultimately, we’re building Why because we believe the world needs more spaces for real, unfiltered conversations. Do you like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Threads, Bluesky, Tumblr, Tiktok? Did you get 'backstabbed' by any of these? Because we did. We’re not trying to be another app fighting for your screen time. We want to be the place you go when you’re ready to think, question, and connect. We’re still coding, testing, and dreaming big. Check out the Roadmap page for what’s coming in Q3 2026.

So, that’s why we’re building Why. It’s not just an app. It’s a movement to bring back curiosity, connection, and real talk. Want to join us? Head over to the waitlist page, check out what we’re up to, and let’s create something awesome together.
